TRAVELLERS have been evicted from a supermarket car park after pubs were left in disarray during a night of chaos.

Police responded to reports of antisocial behaviour at several pubs in Warwick Street and Chapel Road, Worthing, on Thursday night.

Cans of beer that had not been bought in the pubs were left strewn on the floor, as well as food packaging and tables were vandalised by permanent marker.

The travellers at the Morrisons car park in Newland Street, Worthing, half a mile away from the pubs, were evicted by Sussex Police on Friday morning.

One man, who wanted to stay anonymous, claimed people “urinated on the floor in the bar area” and “defecated in the sinks”.

He said: “The publicans are absolutely shocked and appalled. These people were inside trashing the place, they bought their own alcohol while the bar stopped serving.

“There was drawing on tables, urinating on floors in the bar area, excrement was in the sinks, rubbish all over the floor.

“People are saddened by this. Are there going to be more police out over the weekend?"

Cans of Fosters and Carlsberg were littered across the floor, as well a can of deodorant, crisp packets and Dairylea Dunker packets.

Police were in Worthing town centre on Thursday following reports of antisocial behaviour.

The pubs believed to have been affected were Three Fishes Wetherspoons, Slug and Lettuce, O'Connors and Thieves Kitchen.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Sussex Police responded to reports of antisocial behaviour involving a large group of people gathered at pubs in Warwick Street and Chapel Road, Worthing, shortly before 8pm on Thursday.

“Police officers, including specialist public order officers, attended both scenes to engage with business owners and the group in order to ensure the safety of the public and to minimise disruption to the wider community.

“The group dispersed shortly after midnight and some returned to an unauthorised encampment in the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Newland Street.

“Police powers were used to evict the encampment on Friday morning, September 2, and the group left the area.

“No arrests were made in relation to the incidents at the pubs, but investigations are ongoing.”
