ARGUS readers have been reacting to the news that Liz Truss has been chosen as the next Prime Minister.

After Truss won the vote to become Conservative Party leader over Rishi Sunak, she will now replace Boris Johnson when he steps down from the position on Tuesday, September 6.

Readers have been giving their thoughts on the country’s new leader whose first job will be dealing with the looming energy bill crisis.

One reader, Allan King, said: “If she can sort out the mess Boris has left like stopping energy companies raising prices again and lowering them back to what they used to be then yes if she can’t and she agrees for the price rise then no.”

Truss was elected after seeing off challenges from a number of other candidates including Penny Mourdant and current chancellor Nadhim Zahawi.

She will now travel to Balmoral to formally be appointed Prime Minister before she names her cabinet.

Many of the reactions to the new Prime Minister have centred around how her cabinet will deal with the cost-of-living crisis. While some have congratulated Truss for winning the leadership election, others have been sceptical as to how effective she will be.

Dan Ramsay supported Truss, saying “she’ll do a great job I’m sure”. On the other hand, Steve Wallis-Tayler commented “we’re doomed, we’re all doomed”.

Reaction to Truss’ election has been mixed across the Brighton and Sussex area, with some choosing to use the opportunity to criticise the government.

On Twitter, user @wearebrighton said: “Liz Truss is the worst appointment I’ve ever seen, and that includes Jeff Wood as Brighton Manager. God help us”, likening the new Prime Minister to the manager who was sacked after winning only two games in three months in charge.
