Statistics about Brighton and Hove's new school admissions system have been revealed.

The figures, which Brighton and Hove City Council had been keeping away from the public, show parents have continued to express preferences for the highest performing schools in academic league tables, even if they live outside their catchment areas.

They have been released as 2,355 children in the city today find out which secondary school they have been allocated, along with more than 560,000 across the country.

The statistics show 481 parents picked Blatchington Mill School in Hove as their first choice, competing for only 300 places, and 469 chose Dorothy Stringer first despite only 308 places being available.

Almost 500 families listed Dorothy Stringer as one of their choices even though they lived outside of its catchment.

More than 300 did the same with Blatchington Mill.

The lottery introduced by the council for the first time this year was used to decide which pupils were given the places.

The table below shows which schools parents picked as their preferences this year and which they got in to.

The first figure refers to the number of people who picked it as their first choice and in brackets the number of those who got places.

The third figure reveals the number of people who picked the school as their second choice with the number of those who got places in bracket.

The fifth figure is the number who picked it as their third choice with the number who gained places in brackets.

The seventh figure gives the total number of first, second and third preference choices the school received with the number who were successful in brackets.

The last figure shows how many pupils were allocated the school when it did not feature among their choices.
