In response to Sylvia Harwood who suggests we go back to using the brown bags with string handles which were used to carry shopping home in the 1960s (Letters, March 3), bear in mind that in those days most mums did not go out to work. People shopped daily and could easily carry their shopping home from the shops in just one or two bags - not the 20 or 30 bags from the get-it-all-in-one-go shopping trip of today.
Regarding the apples in plastic trays, I have never been in a supermarket where the only apples available were in those trays. If people simply did not select those trays but chose the loose ones, the supermarket would stop supplying them packaged in that way.
