THE co-leaders of the council’s Labour group said Prime Minister Liz Truss represents “more of the same” and called for a change of government.

Councillors Carmen Appich and John Allcock, who lead the Labour group on Brighton and Hove City Council, said the new Prime Minister has offered no answers to allay the worries of residents of the city, particularly around the cost of living crisis.

In a joint statement, the pair said that she is “not on the side of workers and their families”, noting that she was recorded claiming that the country’s woes have been caused in part by people not working hard enough.

They said: “Liz Truss is taking over the reins of government at such a critical time, when the country faces extreme challenges that mean people will struggle to eat and heat their homes this coming winter.

“Unfortunately, she has said and done nothing to give Labour councillors the confidence that she is up to the scale of that challenge or has a plan for the various crises Britain faces today.

“Truss is not the answer to the mess that 12 years of Tory rule have put our city and our country in. She represents more of the same.

“The change this country needs is not at the top of the Conservative Party - it’s a change of government. Only Labour can offer Britain the fresh start we all deserve.”

Liz Truss was formally appointed as Prime Minister by the Queen earlier today at a meeting at Balmoral, the royal’s summer residence. She is expected to give a speech to the nation upon her return to Downing Street.

Earlier today, Boris Johnson handed his resignation to the Queen after giving a speech outside Number 10 reflecting upon his achievements in office.

He pointed to the government’s record on Brexit, the vaccine rollout, Britain’s support of Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and the unemployment rate, which he said was down to lows not seen since he was “bouncing around on a space hopper”.
