A MAN is confirmed to have died after "jumping off" the Palace Pier at low tide.

He had been in hospital after reportedly leaping from the pier along with another man a fortnight ago.

The Argus has been told that the man had his life support turned off last week.

The second man, said to be a friend, has been discharged from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton.

Those close to the pair are said to be supporting him "at this horrible time".

There was a massive emergency operation in response to the incident at around 7pm on Sunday, August 28.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Two men were taken to hospital having reportedly jumped into the sea from Brighton Palace Pier on August 28.

“One man has now sadly died from his injuries.

“His next of kin have been informed and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner.

“The second man has been discharged from hospital.”

Police records indicate the man died on September 7.

Two council seafront officers swam around 300 metres to find one man unconscious and face down in the water, while another was unresponsive, shaking and clinging to a life ring under the pier.

A witness said how CPR was performed on one of the men for “30 minutes” while a large crowd watched on.

Another person described the aftermath of the incident as like something out of a “horror movie”.

A man, only named as Daniel, said the experience was “surreal”.

“A very shocking experience”, he said.

“Children were still bouncing up and down while a huge scene was going on.

“It was like something out of a horror movie.

“There were lots of police, ambulances, there was a helicopter.

“There were lots of police cars, sirens all around the pier.

“People were getting upset.

“There were 100 people watching or more.

“It was very surreal.

“There were lots of people screaming and lots of little children who were scared.

“It was very distressing.”

Brighton and Hove City Council has since warned of the dangers of jumping off the pier
