BIN collections will be suspended on the day of the Queen’s funeral. 

Several councils in both West and East Sussex said refuse and recycling collections in their areas will be affected on Monday.

Here are the local councils’ plans for collections:

East Sussex

Eastbourne

All waste collections on Monday will be suspended and collected on Saturday, September 24.

A spokesman for Eastbourne District Council said: “If you are due a refuse collection on Monday 19 September, we will collect this on Saturday 24 September. 

“If this change affects you, please place your bins out by 6am on Saturday 24 for our crews to carry out this catch-up collection.

“If you are due a recycling or garden waste collection on Monday 19 September, please also place your bin out by 6am on Saturday 24. 

“While we hope to collect all bins on this day, it is possible some may not be picked up. 

“If this is the case, your bin will be emptied on the next scheduled date along with any extra recycling or garden waste.”

Lewes

All waste collections will be suspended on Monday.

A spokesman for Lewes District Council said: “We will collect refuse, food waste, recycling, and garden waste collections one day later than usual next week.

“Clinical sharps collections will be collected as normal on Wednesday 21 September.”

Brighton and Hove

Refuse and recycling collections will be taking place as normal in the city but there will be a pause between 11am and noon, when the funeral service takes place. 

Hastings

Waste and recycling collections will take place as usual on Monday.

Rother 

Waste and recycling collections will take place as usual on Monday.

Wealden

All bin collections will take place as normal on Monday in Wealden, with Biffa staff adhering to any periods of silence throughout the day. 

A spokesman for Wealden District Council said: “Following discussions within the Waste Partnership and with Biffa it has been agreed that all waste collection services in Wealden will operate as normal on the bank holiday Monday, September 19 which has been announced to coincide with the state funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the last day of national mourning.

“Biffa has stated that all staff will be instructed to adhere to any period of silence on the day, including turning off their engines if safe to do so.”

West Sussex

Adur and Worthing 

There will be no waste collections on Monday in the Adur and Worthing area. 

A spokesman for Adur and Worthing Councils said: “Most households' bin collections will move forward one day. 

“Your collection day will then stay on that new day until the next bank holiday. 

“Town centre rounds have fixed collection days and won't change days.”

Chichester

There will be no waste collections on Monday.

A spokesman said: “Chichester District Council is putting additional resources in place to collect any excess waste or recycling on the next fortnightly collection date Monday, October 3 for those affected in its area. 

“Due to this, the council is asking residents affected to place any additional waste in a bag at the side of their bin on this date. 

“The council apologises for any inconvenience this causes and thanks residents for their cooperation in these exceptional circumstances.”

Arun District

There will be no waste collections on Monday in the Arun area.

A spokesman for the council said: “All council offices will be closed and all waste, recycling and green waste collections will be suspended and running a day late until Monday, September 26.

“Please let any neighbours, friends or family that may not have online access know as this announcement is short notice.”

Mid Sussex

All waste and recycling collections due to take place on Monday will now take place on Saturday, September 24. 

Crawley 

All waste and recycling collections have been suspended on Monday and will take place a day later in Crawley. 

Collections will return to normal on Monday 26.

Horsham

There will be no waste collections on Monday in the Horsham area.

A spokesman for the council said: “Households due a collection on Monday will be collected on Saturday, September 24 and we will endeavour to collect as many properties as possible that have been affected. 

“Bins will need to be presented for collection by 5am on Saturday 24 September as we will be starting early. 

“All other collection days will remain unchanged. 

“If your property is affected, your bin calendar has been updated. Check your bin collection calendar.”
