A RAILWAY bridge has been closed for five weeks as vital repairs take place.

Highways teams closed the bridge in Glynde, near Ringmer, for waterproofing work and fixing potholes.

There will also be work to repoint brick walls and paint the steel railings.

The bridge closed yesterday and work will continue until Monday, October 17.

A spokesman for East Sussex Highways said: “We appreciate that this road closure will cause some disruption to motorists, but it is essential to keep the public and workers safe while repairs are carried out.

“Investigations have shown that water has been leaking through the bridge, which can damage the structure and contribute to potholes forming on the road surface.

“Repairing the waterproof membrane and resurfacing will protect the bridge and result in a smoother drive for motorists using this section of road.”

People can still walk across the bridge while the work is carried out.

Traffic will be diverted via the A27, A26, Ringmer Road and New Road.

Part of Lacys Hill, which goes through the village and over the bridge, will be closed.
