A SCHOOL has thanked one of its governors who has been involved for nearly half a century.
Reg Hook worked at Dorothy Stringer school in Loder Road, Brighton, since 1976.
He has decided to retire after 46 years working at the school.
Reg has a passion for athletics and along with colleague Chris Carter organised several athletics meets at the Withdean stadium.
A spokeswoman for Stringer said: “In September this year the governing body of Dorothy Stringer school will say a warm goodbye and a huge thank you to Mr Reg Hook, who has served our school for no less than 46 years.
“As a teenager, Reg attended Fawcett Boys’ School on the Pelham Road site in Brighton, and he has always been a fierce support of comprehensive schools in Brighton.
“At Dorothy Stringer, we have benefitted from Reg’s lifetime of service to our school; he is a man of great integrity and humility who has supported the students, staff and headteachers throughout the highs and lows of school life over the last five decades.
“His 46 years of service at Dorothy Stringer included a 13-year stint as chairman of governors, and he has remained on the board as a knowledgeable participant ever since.
“Reg is the kindest and most thoughtful of men whose devotion to duty is a rare and special thing. This year he attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace, having been invited in recognition of his outstanding public service.
“Reg has also always had a keen passion for youth athletics in the city. Along with Mr Chris Carter, Reg was instrumental in organising and supporting athletics meets at Withdean track and field stadium, which offered local young people the opportunity to train and compete.
“He often combined this passion with a great flair for photography. He has a great eye for capturing the energy and talent of young athletes and their coaches and published many photos of competitors and winning teams in the local press.
“Dorothy Stringer also has an amazing archive of memories of sporting prowess, incredible drama productions and other school events that he has photographed.
“Reg Hook has been a devoted governor and we would like to honour his tireless dedication to and lifelong support of our school. We are forever grateful.”
