A LEISURE centre has been forced to close as a result of widespread power cuts.

Stanley Deason Leisure Centre in Wilson Avenue in Whitehawk, Brighton, has been forced to close as a result of a lack of power.

Brighton and Hove City Council has tweeted that "we've had to close the Stanley Deason Leisure Centre this evening due to a power cut".

The leisure centre website states that the site will be closed "until further notice".

The council added that the outdoor pitches would be open until sunset.

The closure is part of a number of problems arising from an 'explosion' at a substation which resulted in as many as 800 people being without power for some time.
