FIREFIGHTERS have attended the scene after a fire broke out at a university building causing it to be evacuated. 

East Sussex Fire and Rescue were first alerted to the incident at the University of Brighton at around 1.35pm yesterday afternoon. 

The blaze is thought to have started in a building between the Cockcroft and Watts buildings in Lewes Road.

A spokesman for ESFR said: “The building was evacuated due to a fire on the third floor. 

“We used four appliances, and the ARP and the control unit.

“We were assisted by West Sussex Fire and Rescue who sent appliances from Shoreham and Worthing. 

“We used breathing apparatus and CO2 extinguishers to deal with the fire, whic started in the plant room on the third floor. 

“There were no casualties.”
