A MAN has been taken to hospital after being rescued from a river following a large emergency service response.

The incident was first reported just after 10pm in Arundel, after reports were made of a person in distress in the River Arun.

Police, ambulance and West Sussex fire crews assisted Littlehampton RNLI and Coastguard at the scene. A police helicopter also attended.

Passers-by have said that around 25 to 30 personnel were involved, they also praised the response as “fantastic teamwork”.

Sussex Police have now confirmed that the man was located and rescued from the water before being taken to hospital.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police received a report of a person in distress after entering the River Arun in Arundel just after 10pm on Saturday September 24.

“Officers attended the scene along with colleagues from the fire service and coastguard. 

“The National Police Air Service (NPAS) were also deployed.

“The person was located, recovered from the water, and was taken to hospital, where he remains.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue have also reported that two appliances attended the scene. 

A spokesman said: “We got the call at 10.50pm from the police who requested our assistance. 

“We sent two pumps from Littlehampton.

“The coastguard recovered a male from the river.”
