Congratulations to charity fundraiser Simon Spinks for getting to Everest base camp with his teddy bear, to raise money for the British Heart Foundation (The Argus, May 7).

Not only is climbing to 18,000ft an incredible feat, to do so to raise money in such a charming way by holding a teddy bears' picnic is even more worthy of praise.

Contrast this to the Chinese government taking the Olympic flame to the summit of Everest.

The protests around the Olympic flame in London, among other places, have drawn attention to the treatment of the Tibetan nation by the Chinese.

The treatment of the Tibetan people and its own people by the Chinese government has tainted the idea of the Olympics as a celebratory occasion.

I, for one, will boycott watching the games and I hope other people will as well.

Simon Spinks' teddy bears' picnic has more in common with Olympic ideals than the Beijing games ever will.
