ONE of the city’s four Wetherspoons has been put up for sale as the pub chain looks to sell dozens of sites nationally.

The Cliftonville Inn in George Street, Hove, is the only Wetherspoon in Hove and is one of 32 Wetherspoon pubs up for sale across the country.

The chain said it understands that customers and staff may be “disappointed” that it is being sold.

It will continue to operate as a Wetherspoon until it is eventually sold.

The chain confirmed it has no plans to open more pubs in Sussex currently.

The Cliftonville is being sold with all fixtures and fittings apart from tills and IT equipment.

It is currently held on a commercial licence owned by JD Wetherspoon, set at £103,000 per year, which expires in February 2032.

The Cliftonville has a licence to sell alcohol from 9am until 12.30am Sunday to Thursday, and 9am until 1am on Friday and Saturday.

The sale brochure notes the outdoor seating area and potential to create a roof terrace on the first floor as two notable features for the pub.

It states: “Fixtures and fittings with the exception of all tills, IT equipment, leased and branded items can be included as part of the sale should they be required.

“Stock will be removed from the premises prior to completion.

“Interested parties are asked to undertake discreet customer visits in the first instance. No formal viewings will be permitted unless arranged through the joint selling agents.

“Under no circumstances should any direct approach be made to any of our client's staff. Offers are invited for the benefit of our clients leasehold interest.

Eddie Gherson, Wetherspoon spokesman, said: “We can confirm that Wetherspoon has put Cliftonville Inn (Hove) on the market.

“On occasion Wetherspoon does put some of its pubs up for sale.

 “This is a commercial decision.

“We understand that customers and staff will be disappointed with it.

“The pub will continue to operate as a Wetherspoon outlet until it is sold.”

There are three other Wetherspoons in Brighton: The Bright Helm in West Street, The Post and Telegraph in North Street and The West Quay in Brighton Marina.
