A MULTI-MILLION-POUND project to transform a park is gathering pace.

Drone pictures, released by Worthing Borough Council, show the new children’s play area at Brooklands Park, Worthing, is nearing completion.

When finished, it will have over 30 pieces of equipment, including a large sandpit, swings and two climbing structures over four metres high.

In the next few months work will move on to the next phase of the £3 million scheme, which will see the park’s old toilet block demolished in preparation for a new “sustainable” café, a seating area and Changing Places toilet.

Work will also begin to create an outdoor space for events such as football and frisbee complete with seating, a “contemplative” garden with sensory plants, a new accessible pathway circumnavigating the lake with seating areas and shelters, a 1.55 mile (2.5km) fitness trail, a community garden, as well as space to hold community and environmental activities.

This phase of work is the second stage of the Brooklands Park regeneration project.

Two years ago, Worthing Borough Council embarked on an “extensive” restoration of the lake and stream.

Silt was removed, free flowing water channels were created and windmill oxygenators were installed to improve water quality for fish, plants and other wildlife.

The council hopes the area will become an “outdoor interactive classroom” and science learning resource supporting the wider STEM (sicence, technology, engineering and maths) curriculum for schools in the borough.

It also hopes the new facilities at the park will improve residents’ wellbeing and that physical activity and exercise will be encouraged with the new adventure play area, walking trails and fitness route.

The project is one of almost 100 that have been undertaken by Worthing Borough Council to improve the area's facilities.

Altogether, 75 schemes in the council’s capital investment programme for this year have been completed or are progressing “satisfactorily”.

Despite delays and external supply issues, a further 24 other projects are also due to be completed over the coming months.

These include work to transform Decoy Farm into a new business park and the installation of new "state-of-the-art" gigabit internet.
