Brighton is one of the most houseproud cities in the UK, according to new research.

The nationwide study revealed that people from Newcastle have the cleanest, tidiest homes, with as many as 68 per cent of those from the city claiming to be extremely houseproud.

Cambridge dwellers came in second place  - 62 per cent agreed they are proud of keeping their homes spick and span.

Brummies came third in the list of those most happy to show off their homes (59 per cent) followed by London (58 per cent), and Glasgow (57 per cent), according to the study by Procter and Gamble.

Brighton placed tenth in the poll with 52 per cent of people saying they would describe themselves as extremely houseproud.

Overall, 55 per cent of the nation would describe themselves as “houseproud”, meaning to be proud of one’s house or housekeeping, with a quarter of Brits always making sure guests take their shoes off at the door.

Overall, 36 per cent said that when their house feels clean and tidy, it makes them feel serene, while a third (35 per cent) said being in a messy home makes them feel stressed.

The research also found almost a fifth of Brits (22 per cent) are guilty of secretly judging people with messy homes.

Some 76 per cent of those who claim their house is “spick and span”, also describe their outlook on life as positive and “glass half full”.

The 72 per cent of those who admit their house is a mess say they are largely negative, “glass half empty”.

Almost a quarter (23 per cent) admit that cleaning their homes from top to bottom makes them feel calm and relaxed.

9.       Leeds - 54 per cent

10.   Brighton - 52 per cent.
