A CITY centre university bridge has been officially opened by the leader of the council.
The bridge goes over Lewes Road in Brighton and will “provide a simple, fast, and safe link for communities on either side of Lewes Road.”
It was officially opened with a ribbon cutting yesterday afternoon by Phelim Mac Cafferty, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council.
The bridge was set to open in Spring but has seen delays.
It was opened to the public in September but the official ribbon cutting took place yesterday.
Councillor Mac Cafferty said: “I am thrilled to open the new University of Brighton public bridge over Lewes Road. It is a bold addition to the landscape.
“The university campus is rebuilt with quality buildings and materials. A great collaboration between the council and Landsec Group.”
Professor Debra Humphris, vice chancellor of Brighton University, thanked Cllr Mac Cafferty for his support with the project.
Residents in the area criticised the project in February for “constant noise, road closures, roadworks and traffic jams”.
The bridge was paid for by the university and has received largely positive feedback.
One person has criticised it for its cycling compatibility due to the bike ramps being “fantastically close” to the wall and handrail.
