Police have issued a statement following a crash that caused miles of traffic along the A27.

Traffic was brought to a virtual standstill after a vehicle collided with the central reservation earlier this morning along the highway westbound between Carden Avenue (Hollingbury/Ditchling Junction) and the A23 London Road.

The crash, which closed the road during rush hour, caused severe delays of almost half an hour for motorists on their morning commute, with traffic stretching for more than three miles past Falmer.

A second incident exacerbated delays for drivers after a car broke down around the A27 Falmer Hill westbound at B2123 The Drove at the Falmer/Rottingdean Junction.

Traffic also built up along the road eastbound for a time due to “onlookers” viewing the huge queues of congestion, which spilt into neighbouring roads in Brighton.

A police spokesman confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.
