Marathon organisers are reportedly “extremely confident” the 2023 event will go ahead despite financial difficulties.

This comes after angry runners from this year’s race said they had still not received prize money from Grounded Events, the company that runs Brighton Marathon.

Alix Ramsier, winner of the event this April, described the situation as “a mess” and said his success has been “tainted.”

According to reports, suppliers are also still awaiting payment.

Grounded Events said the pandemic, along with rising costs and fewer entrants have led to financial difficulties.

The company’s co-director Tom Naylor told the BBC: "Everyone is struggling and everyone is finding things difficult and we're constantly working with people who owe us money in order for us to pay people we owe money."

They are yet to confirm when people owed money will be paid.

Entry numbers are recovering since the pandemic with 1,000 more runners in this year’s race than in September 2021.

But Mr Naylor said that a “significant” fall in participation was causing the company problems.

"We've come back and we're holding events which are more expensive with the increased cost of fuel and cost of people,” Mr Naylor told the BBC.

“Running during lockdown was at an all-time high, but we have seen a significant fall in participation which none of us though would be the case.”

Mr Ramsier, who runs a lawn care company, previously told the Argus he would not run in the Brighton Marathon again while it is managed by Grounded Events.

“It’s scandalous really,” he told the BBC.

“They have got a lot of work to do to regain the trust of the running community.”
