A new “friendship bench” has appeared by a seafront lagoon to raise awareness around mental health and champion the work of a local artist.

The bench at Hove Lagoon features floral artwork with acrylic paint by artist Suzi Lowe, emblazoned with the words “let friendship blossom”.

It was donated by the Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance, having been restored and redesigned after being moved from its original home in George Street in Hove.

The bench is the first in a series being installed across the city as part of a “trail” by the city’s tourism alliance.

Councillor Robert Nemeth, chairman of the Friends of Hove Lagoon, said: “We are delighted with our new bench which exists to encourage conversation and promote awareness of mental health issues.

“It is in the most wonderful spot at the lagoon, looking west across the two pools towards the afternoon sun, which most certainly raises the spirits.

“I very much look forward to seeing the rest of the Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance’s exciting trail.”
