Brighton residents have revealed what they would miss most about the city  if they moved away.

After The Argus asked the question, hundreds of people took to social media to share their answers.

While some mentioned the physical parts of the city they would miss, others told of their memories of living in Brighton having moved away.

One commenter, David Rowan, said: “I spent the first 23 years of my life there until moving just across the Sussex border to Hampshire.

“I frequently visited in the 50 years since and still have old school friends from the grammar school that long ago became Bhasvic.

The Argus:

“While seeing how the city has boomed, I recognise the problems but my heart is still there. Love it, particularly the sea and long promenade walks.”

Other former residents have also shared what they miss , with one woman saying it was the “smell of the sea”.

Deborah Cortey, who left Brighton 42 years ago, added: “even if I live on the Med it doesn’t smell the same.”

One person said they would miss natural wonders such as “watching starling murmurations over West Pier”. Yolanda Samuels said she would miss “Brighton and Hove Albion FC and the Amex, The Lanes and the North Laine and friends that have become a second family to me”.

Jane Nayar agreed, adding: “I miss The Lanes and the quirkiness, the smell of the sea and the vastness of its horizon, the sound of the seagulls and its colourfulness. That’s what I miss.”

Other residents praised how diverse the city was.

Speaking about the culture in the city, Gandhi Rosie said: “It’s the most colourful and accepting society. You can be and look however you feel and want to and it is always perfectly OK as it’s you. I never felt this free to just be me.”
