Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle has joined calls for a general election to end the "chaos" in Westminster.

He said the resignation of Liz Truss "won't be the end of the circus" and predicted another civil war will erupt among the Conservatives to find her replacement.

He said: "I was elected in 2017 and have been in Parliament though some pretty tumultuous times, but nothing even comes close to the chaos we are seeing now.

"The functions and decisions of government remain in a state of paralysis, as they have done for most of the year.

"It is clear we need a general election and I will make that call alongside my opposition colleagues.

"Unfortunately though, we would need 40 or so Tory MPs to vote with us to make that happen. As the saying goes, turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

"The sooner this farce of Conservative rule ends, the better."

Mr Russell-Moyle also said the government's collapse would mean the legislation to end no-fault evictions would be shelved until a new leader is elected.

He said: "We were finally approaching the finishing line with legislation due to be brought in. The failure of government to function means people will needlessly become homeless in the run-up to winter."

All three of the city's MPs have now called for a general election to take place as another contest for the Conservative leadership begins.

A new Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader will be in place by next Friday.
