Tucked away in the heart of The Lanes, Gars is one of Brighton’s oldest Chinese restaurants, having served residents and visitors alike for almost four decades.

The restaurant in Prince Albert Street is one of the three venues where Argus readers can dine for £15 with our special offer.

I went along to see what customers can feast upon and was not disappointed.

We were presented with the special "dine for £15 menu", with five delicious starters and five mouth-watering main courses to choose from.

I opted for the barbecue spare ribs and beef in a black bean sauce, while my partner chose to indulge with the vegetable spring rolls and lemon chicken for a main.

After being offered a finger bowl to rinse our fingers, we did not have to wait long before our first course was brought to the table.

Steam rose from both dishes and the strong scent of barbecue from my spare ribs wafted in the air.

I was unsure how to approach eating the tantalising ribs  - use a fork or the chop sticks provided? I soon resorted to using my hands and got fully stuck in.

The ribs were succulent, with the meat easily peeling off the bone, while my partner said his spring rolls were crispy, with the sweet chili dip providing a spicy accompaniment.

The waiter, Ashley, soon returned with our main course, presented with two accompanying bowls of egg fried rice and pak choi.

While my partner spent some time struggling with how to use chopsticks, even googling a ‘how to’ video on his phone, I admitted defeat and went for the cutlery provided.

The beef was juicy and tender, with jalapenos providing a welcome spiciness to the dish. My partner said his lemon chicken was crispy with a pleasant and not overpowering sharp flavour.

I spoke to co-owner Minky Lee after our meal, who said that the restaurant has often adapted its menu to keep up to date with current trends, offering a selection of vegan options and using locally sourced meat and seafood.

After what was easily my best experience of Chinese food in the city, I will certainly be sure to visit Gars again soon.
