A blue plaque to commemorate the writer of Only Fools And Horses is to be unveiled.

John Sullivan, who died in 2011, was among the original owners of a flat in Prince of Wales Court in Kingsway, Hove, where the plaque will be displayed

He and his wife owned a third floor flat before moving up to the penthouse.

“We are told that John loved living here by the sea, and the blue plaque is a lovely way for fans to say thanks for all those wonderful characters who have given us so many laughs,” said Pat Fortin, one of the residents who organised the project.

It will be Brighton and Hove Heritage Commission’s 159th commemorative plaque.

Other residents to be commemorated in this way include Mercedes Gleitze, swimmer, and Sir Charles Barry, an architect.

The plaque has been a long time coming, with John’s neighbour Joni van Oortmarssen proposing the idea a few years ago.

At the time, it was thought to be too soon after John’s death, as the heritage commission requires the person commemorated to have been dead for at least five years.

Later, in 2018, Pat discussed the idea with her son. She said: “My son mentioned the idea to the local councillor Robert Nemeth and they thought it would be a good idea to raise the matter with residents again.

“I organised and researched the project and presented it to residents before sending an application to the Brighton and Hove Heritage Commission.”

The project was delayed several times due to the Covid pandemic. Plaques cost £1,500 and the funding was raised by the organisers, Pat and fellow residents Liz Pile and Joni.

Conservative councillor Robert Nemeth said: “I was more than happy to advise residents early on in the process and I am delighted that they have persevered. I cannot wait to see the plaque unveiled at the forthcoming ceremony.”

The unveiling ceremony will take place at noon on November 10.

“This is a public event so anyone is welcome to attend,” said Roger Amarena, chairman of the Brighton and Hove Heritage Commission

Sue Holderness, who played Marlene Boyce in Only Fools And Horses, will give an address, and John’s wife Sharon will unveil the plaque.
