Lloyd Russell-Moyle has called on people to stand up against the government’s “austerity 2.0” economic policy.

In a new video shared on social media, the MP for Brighton Kemptown was joined by fellow Labour MPs Olivia Blake and Kim Johnson, slamming Jeremy Hunt’s plans to cut public services to tackle a void in government finances.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle said: “The new Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has just announced his answer to the nation’s economic woes - and it’s called austerity 2.0.

“The new Chancellor says he will have to make ‘difficult decisions’ but we know what that really means; services cut, nurses’ pay down and waiting times up.

“For those of us who have suffered through austerity, we know it doesn’t grow the economy. It kills it.”

Mr Russell-Moyle notes that ambulance times have hit record highs with the country also having “more food banks than McDonald’s”.

Kim Johnson, MP for Liverpool Riverside, said: “Whoever ends up leading the Tory Party, it’s time to say no more.”

All three MPs in the video are members of a left-wing faction of the Labour Party, known as the Socialist Campaign Group, of which former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is a member.

The new Prime Minister will have to decide whether to go ahead with the planned Halloween statement setting out how the government intends to get the public finances back on track, Downing Street has said.

Work is continuing in Whitehall, led by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, in preparation for the medium-term fiscal plan to be announced on October 31 along with an updated set of economic forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

However, a Number 10 spokeswoman said it would be up to Liz Truss’s successor to decide whether to proceed with that approach and with the same timetable.
