Rail passengers should expect delays and cancellations until this evening, a rail network has warned.

Southern Rail said a fault with the signalling system between Lewes and Brighton means trains are having to run at a reduced speed on all lines.

As a result of this, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 15 minutes.

The company has warned passengers that delays are expected until 9pm tonight.

A Southern spokesman said: "Please allow an extra 15 minutes to complete your journey as trains will be running at a reduced speed between Falmer and Lewes.

"If you do need to travel now, services are running with delays of up to 20 minutes, and some may be cancelled or diverted via Cooksbridge.

"If your train is cancelled you may wish to travel on an alternative route."

Southern said people can use the following Brighton & Hove Buses at no additional cost:

  • 12,12A,12X for Brighton, Newhaven Town, Bishopstone (Hill Rise), Seaford and Eastbourne
  • 28 for Brighton (St Peter's Church), Moulsecoomb (Brighton University), Falmer, Lewes (Post Office / Law Courts)
  • 29, 29B, 29X for Brighton (St Peter's Church), Moulsecoomb (Brighton University), Falmer, Lewes (Post Office / Law Courts) and Uckfield
