Hundreds of runners enjoyed the first day of the Beachy Head Marathon yesterday.

Runners set off from Dukes Drive in Eastbourne and over the Seven Sisters cliffs, past Belle Tout Lighthouse, into the Cuckmere Valley and through the villages of Alfriston, Litlington and Jevington.

The cross country marathon course includes 300 steps, 14 gates and the equivalent elevation of 1,318m along the South Downs National Park route.

Runners could be seen running down the hill from Alfriston Road, near Seaford, and alongside the Cuckmere River.

They also managed to get a well-deserved refreshment break in Litlington.

Eastbourne Borough Council’s lead member for tourism and culture councillor Margaret Bannister said: “With runners and their families attending from all over the country, this is a super boost to our autumnal tourism economy, with many staying overnight to enjoy an extra break by the sea.

“Please do come along and support these amazing athletes, it really is a great atmosphere.”

Road closures were in place in Dukes Drive, Upper Dukes Drive and in Litlington on Saturday for safety reasons.

Runners vary from beginners, walkers to world class runners.

The half marathon, now in its third year, takes place at 8am today. Runners are due back by 12.30pm.

The organisers had to change the route last year due to flooding.
