A disabled reverend says he would rather go to jail than pay a fine he has been given for driving in a bus lane.

Reverend Graham Smith, 61, is refusing to pay the £30 fine he was handed after a traffic warden saw him use the bus lane in Dyke Road to get to a disabled car parking bay in Queens Square, Brighton.

Rev Smith, who has suffered five heart attacks and six small strokes and has problems with his spine and arthritis, said he used the route as it is the only one he knows.

He said: "I'm not going to pay it. I don't have the money on a small pension.

"I am quite happy to go to prison for it."

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said drivers could access disabled spaces without driving in the bus lanes.

She urged Rev Smith to appeal if he believes he was wrongly ticketed.
