Police have launched a murder investigation after a 59-year-old woman was found dead at a house.

Officers responded to reports that a woman had been “seriously assaulted” inside a house in Northbourne Close, Shoreham, just after 12.30pm today.

The woman was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin have been informed.

A large tent and green barrier could be seen outside the semi-detached property.

Forensic officers were also at the house.

Sussex Police said it is an isolated incident involving people known to each other and there is not believed to be any threat to the wider community.

A 64-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into police custody.

People can expect to see a continued and visible police presence in the area while the investigation is ongoing.

At least four police cars and two ambulances were at the scene.
