Police carrying out a murder investigation have asked for more time to question a man arrested following the death of a woman in Shoreham.

Detectives are seeking an extension to the 64-year-old man's custody.

The 36-hour extension would allow police to question him further after a 59-year-old woman died at a property in Northbourne Close on Monday.

A police presence has been maintained in the area after reports of “armed police” storming a house in the road at around 12.30pm that day.

Officers were seen shortly afterwards bringing a man out of the property in handcuffs.

Paramedics attempted to treat the woman at the scene but she was pronounced dead at the property. Witnesses said medical staff "looked pretty distraught”.

Residents have been told to stay in their homes by police while investigations continue but they have stressed that this was an “isolated incident” where those involved were known to each other.

Police forces are normally allowed to remand an arrested suspect in custody for a maximum of 24 hours. However, an extension can be granted to this time in exceptional circumstances in order for further questioning to take place.

Northbourne Close, a quiet cul de sac about ten minutes' walk from Shoreham railway station, was filled with police and ambulances following the incident.

Forensic officers in white boiler suits scoured the area long into the evening yesterday and have been continuing their investigations today.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman was found dead in Shoreham.

“At 12.37pm on Monday, October 24, officers responded to a report that a 59-year-old woman had been seriously assaulted inside a property in Northbourne Close.

“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers at this time.”
