Chichester MP Gillian Keegan has been named as the new Education Secretary in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet.

Keegan, who has served as Chichester MP since 2017, was appointed to the role in Sunak’s first cabinet on Tuesday, October 25.

The MP, who backed Sunak in the recent leadership contest, has become Education Secretary after previously holding an Under Secretary role in the Department of Education under Boris Johnson.

Keegan’s role as Education Secretary comes after she previously oversaw apprenticeships during her time working for the Department of Education. She was the first apprentice to hold the role after beginning her career working in a car factory for General Motors.

Earlier in the week the MP had taken to tweet to share that she was “delighted that my friend and colleague Rishi Sunak is the new leader of the Conservatives”.

She had also previously backed as Sunak in the last Conservative leadership election which ended less than two months ago, where the new PM was beaten by Liz Truss to the top job.

Keegan now replaces former Education Secretary Kit Malthouse and becomes the fifth person to hold the position in the last four months.
