Brighton’s Great British Bake Off contestant Janusz had a close shave in last night’s episode as his custard creations almost cost him the competition.

Janusz Domagala impressed with his signature morning vanilla latte îles flottantes (floating poached meringue on custard), with Prue Leith commending his “perfect” crème anglaise and Paul Hollywood praising the “delicious” flavour.

But things slowly went downhill for the 34-year-old.

He placed second to last in the technical pistachio and praline ice cream cone challenge after his ice cream did not set.

Then things got even worse after the judges were left unimpressed with his ‘Neapolitan’ custard gâteau showstopper, which Paul said was “too gloopy and too dense” and compared it to “wallpaper paste”.

“It looks impressive,” said Paul.

“I like the variety of colours in the piping.

“The proportion of sponge to custard is good.

“The sponge is nice.

“All the custards are too gloopy and dense, too thick on the mouth.”

“It’s not fresh enough,” said Prue.

“I thought all those flavours would be very fresh.”

“The custard is more like wallpaper paste,” said Paul.

This left Janusz in a precarious position and he was in contention for the boot.

Deliberating on who to send home Paul said: “Janusz was disappointing.”

Host Matt Lucas asked: “Who is in trouble?”

“I think Kevin, and Janusz is also in line to go home,” said Paul.

“It tasted awful.”

Thankfully for the two-time star baker, the judges gave teacher Kevin Flynn the chop.

Janusz survived another week and will continue his battle for the Bake Off crown in the quarter finals, which will see the remaining bakers take on pastry.

Before last night's episode sports betting company OLBG tipped Janusz as the favourite to win the 2022 series.
