A postman hopes his new World Cup song will be “this year’s anthem”.

Michael Nunney, 55, is set to release Hey England alongside his band, Grace Can’t Play Guitar, after coming up with the song while doing his rounds.

Going by the stage name Mick Tyler, he will be releasing the song as the country prepares for another international football tournament following the success of the men’s and women’s Euros in 2021 and 2022.

Michael, of The Darlingtons in Angmering, said: “I was working out the lyrics on my rounds while I had the melody in my head. I was trying to get as many of the players’ names in as possible.

“All these songs stick in your head and it's always exciting when a World Cup song comes out. We should get behind them just like everyone did with the women’s team earlier in the year.

“I’m hoping it will be this year’s anthem. I want to get the team involved in the music video if it gets that big that would be phenomenal.”

Michael said that he has always been a football fan and had enjoyed playing for the Brighton and Hove Albion youth team when he was younger.

He said that he now regularly sings in pubs and is a member of several bands.

The postie, who completes his rounds around Worthing, spoke of one particular verse which includes goalkeeper Jordan Pickford playing the ball out from the back and ended with a goal from winger Raheem Sterling at the back post.

Michael added that this is how he thinks England will win the World Cup.

Michael and songwriter friend Chris Payne started the band in 2017 but have been unable to tour yet due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that he would love to “live the dream” and play the song across the country.

The song has not been released yet, but Michael added that the band hopes that it will be out in time for the start of the competition on Sunday, November 20.
