Firefighters were called to a blaze on a balcony of an apartment in the city centre.

Crews attended Milner Flats in Kingswood Street in Brighton after reports of a scooter fire on a balcony.

The teams from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Services used two breathing apparatus and a hose reel to tackle the blaze, which took place around 1.15pm this afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said there were no reports of injuries and the fire was accidental.

She said: “We know that many residents enjoy using their balconies and it’s important to do so safely as fires can spread quickly.

“Keep your balconies as clear as possible, as this substantially reduces the chances of fire and also means you have a safer place to be if there’s a fire inside blocking your escape route.

“Don’t use fire pits, barbecues, patio heaters, chimineas and anything else which involves hot materials.

“If you do smoke, always ensure your cigarette is properly put out and never throw it over the side.

“White goods should be inside homes, not exposed to the weather or in places where they could catch alight without people noticing or an alarm sounding.

“Adding things like fairy light, fake grass or screening can also significantly increase the risk of fires.”

She also praised the actions of the residents of the flat for calling 999 immediately.

The fire service offers home safety visits to those who need extra support in making their home safer from fire, with more information available at 0800 177 7069.
