A man has spoken of his frustration after some of his collection of ornamental cats were stolen from a street.

Danny McEvoy, from Newhaven, and his friend Ruth Farber-Nathan find the porcelain pets from car boot sales and charity shops and display them on his back garden wall.

The display in Ship Street, Newhaven, has been well received since it started in the summer.

The pair were saddened when they discovered four of their china cats had been stolen on Saturday night - but said they will not stop adding to “Newhaven’s famous cat wall”.

Danny said: “We just collect as many cats as possible. I thought I'd stick them on the wall and I made a Facebook page for it called Newhaven’s famous cat wall.

“It’s just sad that it’s the way it is. I was just disappointed really.

“I stick them on with glue but I had four of them nicked. It’s just such a shame as the children love it.

“It was Sunday morning I noticed they were gone. One of them cost £3 that was stolen. I think someone handpicked the valuable looking ones.

“I don’t think I will put the good cats up any more. People have been donating them and leaving them at my front door.

“I started the cat wall this summer - it's for the community and to bring a smile to people's faces.

“Someone said a van was lurking around but other than that I’m not sure of anyone who would steal them.

"I haven’t reported it to police, they’re busy with other things.”

Ruth said: "I hope they enjoy them as much as the community did. We just do it for a bit of fun."

Danny claims that people have come from as far as Lincoln to see the collection.

He said he might put more glue down to try to secure the moggies.

Danny and Ruth also have plans for a collection box where people can donate to a cat charity.
