Police and a bomb squad were called to a suspected landmine that was discovered on a footpath.
Teams attended Milton Street near Alfriston yesterday morning at 11.15am to the suspected landmine.
The landmine was taken to a nearby field to be detonated but was deemed to be a training mine which was not dangerous.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “An explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team is dealing with a suspected landmine that has been discovered near a footpath at Milton Street.
“The device, believed to be historical, was spotted by someone working close by at Peachey's Corner around 11.15am on Monday.
“The EOD team arrived shortly before 3pm. An area around the site, has been cordoned off while the incident is dealt with.
“It was training mine with no danger to the public and all now stood down.”
