Brighton’s Great British Bake Off contestant is one step closer to baking glory.

Janusz Domagala made it through pastry week to secure his spot in the series’ semi-final next week, despite a “raw” vol-au-vent and spring roll mishap.

The five bakers contended with vol-au-vents, spring rolls and a pie-scape showstopper in last night’s quarter final.

Janusz hit the ground running with his signature strawberries and cream vol-au-vents.

The 34-year-old battled with his crème patisserie filling, eventually abandoning the venture and replacing it with whipped cream.

His creations were branded “boring” by judge Paul Hollywood and were called “raw” by fellow judge Prue Leith.

“They’re quite attractive I like what you’ve done with the strawberries on the top with the glaze,” said Paul.

“They’re a bit uneven.

“They needed a bit longer in the oven.”

“How did you get on with the crème pat?” said Prue.

“What crèm pat?” said Janusz.

“It never happened.”

“They’re still a bit raw,” said Prue.

“It’s a bit boring,” said Paul.

“Because all it is is cream and strawberry.”

Next up was the technical, which saw Janusz narrowly miss first place after he lost or miscounted one of his spring rolls.

Finally, Janusz’s ‘the very hungry sausage dog’ was in tribute to his very own sausage dog Nigel, who he owns with partner Simon.

As part of his showstopper Janusz had a salmon pie, as well as a sausage pie, dauphinois pie and apple pie.

The judges praised the flavours of each pie but were critical of the pastry.

“I think you could have made the fish more defined,” said Prue.

“I think if you’d not told me it was a fish I wouldn’t have known.”

Paul said: “The salmon is beautifully cooked, the pastry is alright, it could have been flakier.

“It’s mainly just one lump of salmon.

“Sausage meat is nice.

“It’s a bit dry.”

While Prue said of the apple pie: “That’s lovely.

Maxy was eliminated from the competition while Sayabira won yet another star baker title.

“I’m in the semi-finals,” said Janusz.

“How weird is that?”

The quarter finalists will face Pâtisserie.
