Temporary traffic lights will remain as a water company continues to fix a network of old leaky pipes.
Southern Water has been trying to modernise the old network of pipes in the West Way area of Lancing since a burst in August.
It is around the eighth time pipes have burst in the area since last October.
The work has meant draining the network and using several tankers on the A259 Brighton Road to collect sewage from people’s homes while workers fit a plastic polymer lining inside the pipes.
The lorries and temporary traffic lights on the road have caused massive delays of more than 30 minutes at rush hour most days.
And they will remain for some time while work continues.
A Southern Water spokesman said: “We’re sorry for the continuing disruption to residents near our important work in Lancing and to drivers using the A259.
“We’re working as quickly as we can and after November 11 we should be able to cut the number of tankers – and their noise – by nearly half.
“Traffic management will have to stay in place until the tankers are no longer needed. The tankers are used to manage sewer flows while work goes on.
“Our customer teams have continued to talk to residents and keep them up to speed with our progress and our chief customer officer Katy Taylor will be holding a drop in session with locals.
"We also post weekly updates here about the area on our website.”
Southern Water said it was hoping to have the relining done by October 24.
The water company did not confirm when all the pipes should be completed.
Motorists could be seen queuing after rush hour at around 10am yesterday.
Residents in the area have complained about not being able to sleep due to tankers “revving up” in the early hours of the morning.
They have also faced “fountain of sewage” lining the street in the area previously.
On the company’s website, it states that seven of 11 sections of pipe are finished.
The pipes currently being worked on are between Boundary Road and Sussex Road.
