Twenty-three people were fined for not wearing a seatbelt in a one-day crackdown on traffic offences.

In all 91 cars, motorcycles, trucks and vans were stopped in Hangleton Road, Hove.

Other offences included no tax, insurance or MOT, using mobile phones at the wheel and carrying waste without a licence.

Offenders were caught on camera and their details given to officers at an inspection point further down the road.

In all 27 vehicles were referred to trading standards officers. Three were seized for not having any insurance and one person arrested for failing to provide correct details. Seven were clamped and another reported for having an expired vehicle excise licence.

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency issued eight prohibition notices.

Brighton and Hove City Council's highway operations team, Sussex Police, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, VOSA, trading standards and NCP clampers were involved in the day of action.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "This partnership working is proving to be very effective in clamping down on road traffic offences and uncovering other crime in the city such as fly-tipping and trading standards offences.

"These operations send out a strong message that this city is committed to cutting crime and creating a safer and more pleasant environment in which to live, visit and work." The operation took place on Thursday.
