Comedian Seann Walsh was down to only £20,000 before agreeing to appear on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here this year, it has been reported.

Walsh, who grew up in Brighton, is said to have lost the majority of his net worth before the show after being placed on furlough during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The comedian, 36, is also said to have lost money in part due to the fallout of his Strictly Come Dancing scandal when he kissed dance parter Katya Jones while they were both in long-term relationships. He has since opened up about his battle with anxiety and depression as a result of the incident.

A friend of Walsh’s told The Sun: “Seann’s had a really tough time of it since his last appearance on reality TV.

“He made one silly mistake and he’s been absolutely ripped to shreds for it.

“He was public enemy number one and people would shout at him and make horrible comments.

“His mental health took a battering and the pandemic didn’t help at all as he couldn’t book a gig.

“We’re hoping that I’m A Celebrity will let people see Sean’s softer and funnier side and they will fall in love with him again.”

Walsh was born in Camden but grew up in Brighton, where he kicked off his comedy career.

He began as a host of the venue’s Comic Boon show as well as a warm up act for QI.

The stand-up learned his trade at Jill Edwards’ comedy workshops held at Komedia in Gardner Street.

Documents filed with Companies House suggest that while Walsh’s net worth had previously been estimated at around £350,000, his company was listed as worth just over £50,000 in September 2021.

Walsh also placed himself on furlough after gigs were banned for a long period of time during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

It is not known how much the comedian will be paid for appearing on the popular ITV show.

He is set to appear in the jungle as a late entrant alongside MP Matt Hancock, who lost the Conservative Party whip as a result of his announcement.
