This year, Christ’s Hospital has had a pumpkin contest between the sixteen boarding houses. The pumpkins were displayed in the dining hall for students to see and the result was given out during senior tea. The result was decided by Mr Walters, a member of senior leadership team, and Mr Hawkins. There were many interesting designs including a Day of the Dead themed pumpkin which is in the photo above. One student, J. Young said she found the event to be “climatic”.

The atmosphere during the announcement was tense as the pupils and staff awaited the final announcement. Thornton B won with a brain design. It was carved by the house captain and deputy house captain with the help of a tutor. Thornton B, which is a girls house, has also won house singing two year running. A very large chocolate cake in the shape of a coffin was awarded to the winning house. Maine B was in second place with a very sick pumpkin (shown in the picture above) in a similar design to Leigh Hunt B. Leigh Hunt A came in 3rd place with a very creative design (also shown in the picture above).  Ms Mester, a Barnes B tutor, believed the pumpkin contest to be a “great new initiative”.

Other Halloween celebrations include a Halloween dinner and pumpkins around the site. The servery was decorated with coloured lights and paper decorations. The servery staff were dressed in scary Halloween outfits. There were Halloween jellies and a themed dinner menu. The festivities have been enjoyed by all and a great way to start the half term.
