Latest consultations on the controversial A27 bypass plans in Arundel are to begin next week.

The four-week period will allow residents to have their say on plans which are thought to improve congestion on the busy road.

Events will also be held at locations across Arundel and Fontwell after the previous consultation received more than 4,000 responses.

Andrew Jackson, National Highways project lead, said: “Over the course of 2022 we have made changes to the scheme design, including reducing the impact of additional traffic through Walberton, and we’d now like to present those additional changes and gather feedback on them.

“During this consultation we will be presenting our revised design and seeking your feedback on the changes put forward. Once we have given everyone a chance to comment on the new proposals, we plan to submit our DCO [development consent order] application in spring 2023.”

The new consultation period will begin on Wednesday, November 16, and will run for a month until December 16.

Locations for in-person consultation events include:

  • Arundel Town Hall in Maltravers Street, Saturday, December 3, 10am to 4pm.
  • Fontwell Race Park in Arundel Road, Monday, December 5, 11am to 7pm.
  • Walberton Pavilion in The Street, Saturday, December 10, 10am to 4pm.

Consultation documents for the new proposals will be available at the events which will also be attended by the team behind the project.

The bypass plans have been met with great resistance from residents and campaigners saying they will damage countryside and nearby villages.

One campaigner has written to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Levelling-Up Secretary Michael Gove asking them to intervene.

Highways England said its Grey Route plan would help to alleviate traffic congestion in villages such as Walberton.

National Highways intends to submit a development consent order – the equivalent of a planning application for major infrastructure projects – by spring 2023.

Anyone wanting to provide feedback can do so on the project website when the supplementary consultation period begins, as well as at in-person events.

Plans and consultation materials are also available on the scheme website www.nationalhighways.co.uk/a27arundel or by writing to Freepost A27 ARUNDEL.
