Hotels have joined forces to take part in a beach clean up.

Staff and managers from hotels spent two hours on the wet and windy beach to clear litter from the seafront in Brighton.

The clean-up took place on Tuesday, November 8 and hotel staff picked litter between the Palace Pier and the West Pier.

The hotels that took part are from Brighton and Hove Hoteliers Association, the organisation which arranged the event.

"After such a difficult couple of years for the hospitality industry, I am delighted that we have been able to bring the association back together again,” said Kelly Louw, chairwoman of Brighton and Hove Hoteliers' Association.

“Not only does it enable us with opportunities to work together in the future, but we can also give something back to the city that we are so proud to run our businesses in.”

“The beach clean was a brilliant initiative allowing us to play our part in keeping Brighton tidy and clean whilst also socialising with people in the sector. It was a great morning and I’m proud of what we achieved.”

The Grand Brighton is one of the hotels in the hoteliers' association.

Andrew Mosley, managing director of The Grand and vice-chairman of the association, said: “Sustainability is high on our agenda so the more we can do to help make Brighton greener, the better.”

Brighton and Hove City Council’s street operations team also cleans the beach each morning.

The council said it is working to remove plastics from the waste system, so there is less litter to clean up in the first place.

Jamie Lloyd, lead councillor for biodiversity, said: “The seafront is an integral part of Brighton & Hove and draws millions of visitors to the city each year so we must do everything we can to protect and enhance this unique coastal environment.

“We ask all visitors to take their rubbish home where possible or use the many bins provided along the seafront.

“We are also grateful to groups which organise beach cleans which are a brilliant way for the community to help protect the coastline.”
