Post Office bosses are considering opening a new branch - just months after announcing that 49 in Sussex would close.

The company is consulting residents after the closure of the branch at Golden Cross service station, near Hailsham, which closed in February after the sub-postmaster retired.

The new post office would be at Deanland Wood Park at Golden Cross.

Wealden MP Charles Hendry has criticised the plan after Upper Dicker post office, just two miles away, was forced to close.

It was one of 49 post offices across Sussex axed in January under the Government's Network Change programme.

If approved, the new branch would be located in The Shop in Deanland Wood Park, a mobile home park with a largely retired community, about a mile away from the old post office site.

Facilities would include a low-level counter, a hearing loop, forecourt parking for 20 cars and easy access for people with mobility problems.

The public consultation about the new branch will continue until Friday, June 24.
