90% of schools in England currently wear a uniform. Those in favour of uniforms believe that when students wear uniforms it eliminates the fashion and self confidence factors of children wearing their own chosen clothes. However, those who believe uniform shouldn’t be worn believe that it is more expensive to buy uniforms for children rather than buying them ordinary clothes.

There are multiple perspectives when it comes to uniform: the view of most children- not wearing school uniform- and the view of the adults- to wear school uniforms; however, there were some exceptions.

Year 8 student, Anabelle Taylor, said “I would prefer there to be a uniform that I felt comfortable in. I still think it’s a good idea to have a uniform just not necessarily this one.” Having a school uniform is extremely important as it can help to prepare students for when they eventually go into the workplace. Mr Berhane, the headteacher of St. Catherine’s College, stated “it is much harder being a young person now than it ever has been before”. He suggested that uniform is a great leveller allowing children to “Stand Shoulder to Shoulder with their peers”. Amber Elliott agrees with Mr. Berhane by stating that “we are a place of work and need to be professional”. She also states, “our uniform is very business-like to show were in a formal setting and a place of work.”

On the other hand, student Lucy Coleman highlighted that fact that “you can express yourself more in your own clothes”, also Amber Elliott did agree with Lucy stating that “wearing your own clothes allows you to express yourselves and makes you feel more original”.

In summation, we can see that school uniforms are clearly important and are here to stay for now but reiterating Mr Berhane’s words saying “it is much harder being a young person now that it ever has been before” this will only grow as society changes, so who knows where the balance of the arguments for or against in a further 5 years.
