Barbers have spoken about how grateful they are to be featured in an Argus competition.

Nominations for the Barber of the Year award have now been released.

The award recognises the best barber shops in the region for their hard work and top trims.

Now, nominees are making their case for why readers should vote for them to claim the top prize.

One such nominee is Headroom in Victoria Road in Brighton, with barber Andy Jupp saying: “We are very grateful for people to recognise us.

“We have been here for over 30 years and we pride ourselves on being able to serve anyone in the community.”

One of the things that Andy mentioned Headroom prides itself on is some of its celebrity clientele.

One such regular customer is Fatboy Slim, who he says has been a regular customer at the barbers ever since he was a student.

Other barbers such as Master Wheelers in York Place say that the main thing they pride themselves on is their history and the atmosphere they create.

Mike Bridle, a barber at the shop, said: “Every single one of us is from Brighton and we have been here since 1982. Everyone knows each other.

“We don’t really mind about the success we just do it how we do it.”

Mike said that the success of the barber shop is down to the two owners, Tony Wheeler and Mick Bernard, who have been there since the beginning of the shop.

He added that it was down to the “original boys” for “creating that atmosphere” and making the shop what it is today.

A number of barber shops have been nominated for the awards which recognise the best barbers in Brighton and Sussex and allows readers to choose their favourites.

All of the barbers received the news that they had been nominated and will be advertising the competition in their shops.

Among them are Gloucester Road Barbers, who have been cutting hair since 2008.

Alistair Campbell, who works at the shop, said that he had benefited from the constantly revolving trade of a city such as Brighton.

He said: “Brighton has a lot of people coming and going and barbers rely on return custom but we are trying to give a good haircut.

“We do some students for three years and then we never see them again but we enjoy it and it's just about being consistent.

“I think there’s quite a lot of barbers in the town but we’re the best.”

Alistair also said that the barber shop wanted to create a good vibe and that the décor and friendly conversation tried to reflect that.
