‘& Juliet’, which currently resides at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the heart of London’s West End, opened its doors on September 10th, 2019. Critically proclaimed “Dazzlingly brilliant,” ‘& Juliet’ is a modern adaption of Shakespeare’s renowned play, Romeo & Juliet, centred around Juliet’s journey of independence following Romeo’s death. But why is it that the show has proved to be such a sensation? ‘& Juliet’ is arguably the current trailblazer of the West End. The modernised musical explores themes of gender and sexual orientation, depicting former ideals of female roles and relationship dynamics.

Musicals and plays often adhere to traditional representation - your typical love story between a heterosexual, cisgender couple. ‘& Juliet’ portrays a transgender character; exploring their journey of self-acceptance, a homosexual relationship and polished with a racially diverse cast. It carries an ambience of inclusivity, perhaps what still, after three years of production, attracts crowds of visitors to the sparkling doors of the Shaftesbury. The prosper of the London show has lead to numerous awards and, as of November 2022, its Broadway opening, allowing the allegory to expand further.

The award-winning musical normalises being unapologetically human and delves into the idea that everyone is different. The stark impacts that added representation can have on people is underestimated, especially in such an influential aspect of the modern day. The success of ‘& Juliet’ will undeniably encourage more effort regarding inclusivity for shows in the future.
