An abandoned travel store has been refurbished as a new shop prepares to open in the city centre.

The former STA Travel outlet in North Street, Brighton, had been plagued by graffiti and tagging after the company went bust in August 2020.

However, builders and decorators were seen painting the shopfront over the weekend.

The Argus understands that the new store will be a gift shop, with a range of items seen on display through the shop window, including knitted toys, purses, and woollen hats.

It is not clear when the new store will open.

STA Travel collapsed at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused huge disruption for the travel industry.

Around 500 people lost their jobs as 52 of the company’s travel agency stores closed, including its outlet in Brighton.

A planning application has been submitted to turn the site from a shop into a restaurant and takeaway.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: "We are the freeholder of 38-39 North Street, where the STA Travel shop used to be.

"Another shop is due to open there in line with its current planning permission.

"The current tenant has also submitted a planning application to change the use of the building.

"We are unable to comment on this pending due consideration of the planning application."
