A popular steam railway is lighting up for Christmas.

The Bluebell Railway, based at Sheffield Park Station in Uckfield, runs steam trains through the Sussex countryside.

The railway runs its Christmas light show Steamlights annually.

The carriages are lit up in rainbow colours and the lights colour the dark skies.

In the spirit of Christmas, Bluebell Railway has given away free journeys to people in need.

“We were pleased to be in a position to offer some space to individuals and families who might not be in a position to otherwise enjoy our fabulous Steamlights train," said Lisa Boyle, chief operating officer of The Bluebell Railway.

The Bluebell Railway collaborated with West Sussex county council and the charity Reaching Families to fill three trains with Ukrainian refugee and hosts from local villages as well as families with children with special educational needs.

The railway gave away a total of 77 compartments seating either 6 or 8 people, tables for 4 people and various spaces in the wheelchair accessible carriage on three specific services with a value well in excess of £12,000.

Steamlights is a beautiful, magical experience lighting up the night sky, lifting spirits and brightening hearts, said Kay Yeowart MBE, who hosted the event.

"We are extremely grateful to the Bluebell Railway for inviting many local Ukrainian families who are sheltering from the extreme horrors of war to enjoy this amazing event. The evening was very special for them and they loved every minute.”

The Argus:

The special event took place on Friday, November 18.

The Steamlights railway is open now and running until Sunday, January 8, 2023.

The public can book whole compartments or tables to enjoy the festive fun for themselves.

Services run on select days into the new year and run twice daily - from 4.45pm to 6.15pm and from 7.45pm to 9.15pm.
