Six flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency (EA) for Sussex.

EA has warned that flooding is possible and to be prepared in the following locations:

  • Aldingbourne and Barnham Rifes

EA said: “The Aldingbourne Rife remains high, following twice the monthly average rainfall in November. Flooding will continue to affect fields near Shripney Lane and the A259, parts of the car park at Tesco and land around caravans at Riverside Caravan Centre and Rowan Park Caravan Park.

“Some roads, including Shripney Lane may be impassable, please plan to avoid driving through routes vulnerable to flooding. Rain should clear by 9am Wednesday, leaving a mostly dry day.

“The Aldingbourne and Barnham Rifes will rise a small amount Wednesday, before beginning to fall by 3am on November 24.

“In Barnham, only minor impacts are currently expected, with river levels comparatively lower. More rain Thursday afternoon could take the Aldingbourne Rife higher than observed last Thursday.

“More rain Saturday evening might cause all river levels to rise even higher on Sunday. We continue to monitor the situation and routinely clear grilles through Barnham, including at the Trading Post and our pumps at Felpham are running to reduce flood risk.”

  • Climping Seafront

EA has warned people to be careful if visiting the beach.

“Wednesday morning's tide at 10.30 on November 23 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong westerly force seven winds and large waves,” it said.

“The weather increases tide table values by 0.21 m. The total forecast tide is 6.10 metres chart datum (3.05 mAOD) at Littlehampton. For to hours either side of high tide, minimal flood impacts are expected.

“A small amount of water could find its way behind the beach and may pond on nearby land and fields including at Climping Street car park and Mill Lane.

“The tide level and wave heights are a little elevated over the next three days. This may cause some impacts at each high water until Saturday‚ but where impacts do occur‚ they will be very minor.

“Shingle and debris can be thrown by large waves. Access could be restricted during and after high tide. Take care if visiting Climping beach.”

  • Langstone to Emsworth Harbour

“Wednesday morning's tide at 10.30 on November 23 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong westerly force 5 winds. The weather increases tide table values by 0.4 m. The total forecast tide is 5.20 metres chart datum (2.47 mAOD) at Portsmouth.

“Impacts will be relatively minor and confined to the immediate sea front. For 30 minutes either side of high tide, water will be high at South Street and Queen Street, Emsworth. The Ship Inn car park, Langstone will flood.

“Water will flow into the road at Langstone High Street, but flood depths will be relatively shallow.

“If you have it, and live directly on the harbour front, please install flood protection one hour before high tide.”

  • River Adur East Branch

EA said: “Rain is predicted to clear by 10am Wednesday morning, leaving a mostly dry day.

“It is currently thought river levels will not rise any higher than they were Monday and Tuesday this week, but minor flooding could still possibly affect fields, rural roads and the gardens of properties near Mock Bridge.

“River levels should begin to fall by 11pm on November 23. However, there is unlikely to be enough time for the River Adur to return to normal before more rain Thursday afternoon.

“Another small river rise should be expected Thursday afternoon into Friday, with minor flood impacts again possible. More rain Saturday evening could cause property flooding. Some roads, including the A281 at Mock Bridge, may be affected by flood water, please plan to avoid driving through routes vulnerable to flooding.”

  • Upper River Wey

EA said: “Property flooding is not currently expected. River levels remain high on the Upper River Wey, especially in the Godalming areas. Therefore, flooding of roads and low lying land is expected to continue this evening and tomorrow.

“Levels are dropping in the upper reaches of the Wey but remain high further downstream around Godalming. Levels remain sensitive to further rainfall. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

  • Western Rother

EA said: “The Western Rother is high but slowly falling at Fittleworth. Minor flood impacts will continue to affect fields, rural roads and gardens near Fittleworth.

“Rain should clear by 9am, leaving Wednesday mostly dry. River levels all along the Western Rother will rise a small amount, before beginning to fall around 3pm on November 23 in Liss, 9pm November 23 in Midhurst, and Thursday morning downstream.

“Probably not rising as high as they have been this week. More rain Thursday could see a repeat of Wednesday's river response.

“In Fittleworth, river levels will remain high and could rise close to properties by Friday. More rain Saturday evening could cause property flooding along the length of the Western Rother.

“River levels might not return nearer to normal until next week. Early actions to reduce potential impacts at Lodsbridge and Fittleworth are encouraged. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast.”
